There is a rule of thumb in Melbourne: the best bars are the hardest to find – and this is certainly true of Murmur. This place is just a whisper among Melbourne’s multitude of loud-mouthed bars and nightclubs, but you should listen closely to the sweet nothings it’ll murmur in your ear. Located in a heritage-listed property that was once a coffee and spice warehouse, the bar has retained a few of the building’s original features, including a large crane and trapdoor by the wall opposite the bar.
Named Cocktail Bar of the Year at the 2007 Australian Bartender Awards, Murmur has 75 different cocktails ($18–$19) on offer as well as an extensive list of international beers, wines and spirits. The bar staff are relaxed, friendly and knowledgeable, and the interior design is delicious, with lovely splashes of colour and a good attention to detail.
