Tucked away on Victoria St in North Melbourne is the Red Monkey Tea House, an unassuming little café/bar that also happens to be one of the area’s best. The bar is tiny, comprising one small front room and an even smaller beer garden out the back – but that’s all part of the Red Monkey’s charm. This is a great spot to have a quiet drink with friends, and perhaps a bite to eat.
The menu includes tapas-style dishes ($4.50–$15), ‘light meals’ ($9.50–$16.50 – try the delicious vegetable dumplings), and small gourmet pizzas ($9.50). The modest drinks list includes cocktails, beers and wines. Red Monkey is open Tuesday to Sunday and happy hour is from 4pm–6pm, when you can get $2 teas and coffees, $3 house wines and a $10 cocktail special.
