The Black Cat

Regarded as a true Fitzroy institution, The Black Cat opened its doors long before Brunswick St became the uber-trendy hangout it is today (these days, the always-hip residents of this area are known as ‘Fitzroyalty’). Functioning as a café by day and a bar by night, this place has been chugging along for a couple decades and today it’s more popular than ever – with good reason.

This has to be one of the cosiest and most completely cool venues in Melbourne, what with its comfy couches, large front windows and outdoor seating area covered over by a creeping vine. Basic café food is on offer here for $5–$10, but the emphasis is placed firmly on the drinking. You’ll find DJs spinning funky tunes here by night, and entry to The Black Cat is usually free of cover charges.
