If you’re starting to feel claustrophobic in Melbourne’s often-tiny bars, head up to The Penny Black on Sydney Rd. Housed in Brunswick’s old general post office building, The Penny Black features a huge bar space that includes a sizable stage and plenty of seating, a garage-style covered outdoor lounge area, and a mammoth beer garden.
There are enough quirky elements here to make this a fun hang-out – the postage-stamp wallpaper inside, the yucky ‘Big Buck Hunter Pro’ game in the garage (just trying to imagine Brunswick’s trendy hipsters playing this game is enough for a laugh), and the white picket fence in the garden to name a few. Add to this $6 pizzas, $14 jugs of Pimm’s and regular gigs by local bands and you’ve got a winner.
