Feeling a little avant-garde? Just a ten minute walk from central Melbourne in the arts district of Southbank, The Australia Centre for Contemporary Art is a public gallery presenting artwork by major international and Australian artists. It commissions new work created especially for the large exhibition spaces. Art is presented in all forms: everything from film to sculpture to living art should be expected. The pieces promise to challenge, innovate and question.
An impressive building unveiled in 2002, it is one of Melbourne’s architectural icons. There are five seasons annually and admission is always free. Check online for current exhibition listing. And don’t miss Ron Robertson Swann’s controversial piece Vault located next to the ACCA. After you’ve enjoyed the exhibit, enjoy a fair-trade coffee at the ACCA Café, and reflect on the question: does art imitate life, or does life imitate art?
