f you’re interested in Victorian-era architecture, check out The Block Arcade, located between Collins and Little Collins Streets in the CBD. This gorgeous building was constructed in the 1890s and features the largest mosaic floor in Australia – random, but true. Classified by the National Trust, this arcade is famous for its etched glass ceiling and highly decorated interior.
One of the cutest things about this place, though, is the origin of its name: in the olden days, ‘Doing the Block’ referred to the fashionable pastime of strolling through Collins Street’s shopping arcades on a Saturday morning. Back then, this was Melbourne’s trendiest place to be seen. So don your top hat or pick up your parasol and take a turn about The Block. After all, this kind of elegance never goes out of fashion.
