Art aficionados listen up. Take any tram going North on Swanston Street to The Ian Potter Museum of Art. The entrance is marked by the distinctive sculpture spilling from the façade onto the street which symbolizes discarding European tradition to make way for Australian Art. The present museum opened in 1998 and is the third incarnation of the art gallery, designed by local artist Nonda Katsalidis and houses the extensive collections of the University of Melbourne ranging from international to Australian artists, classic antiquity to contemporary, and also acts as a cultural hub to oversee lectures and events.
The museum presents over sixteen exhibitions per year which all vary in size and scope which include indigenous culture material, decorative arts, and a collection of 20th century poster designs. Entrance is free, and hours are Tuesday to Friday from 10-5, weekends from 12-5 and closed Mondays.
