A great way to see the very trendy inner northern suburbs of Melbourne is to catch the number 86 tram, which travels from the Docklands to Bundoora. The Bourke St GPO (stop 5) is a good starting point. The tram will take you along Bourke St then past Parliament House on Spring St. Get a window seat so you can check out the Carlton Gardens on the left (stop 12), then artsy Gertrude St in Fitzroy.
You’ll pass by Brunswick St (stop 13), then head north and travel up grungy Smith St in Collingwood, a shopping strip during the day and a bar/restaurant hub by night. Next you’ll turn up High St and pass through upmarket Clifton Hill and Westgarth before you get to very funky Northcote, a live music Mecca. This trip will take you around half an hour one way. Tip: Trams are usually packed at peak hours.
